Mission and Vision
At the Day School, we provide a strong academic foundation in general and Jewish studies in an environment in which students feel positive about themselves and others. Our school reflects and teaches respect for the diversity of Jewish life. We challenge our students to exemplify the values of Judaism and of American democratic principles.
Our vision is built on a strong synergy between students and faculty. Our educators inspire our students to find their passion and reach their highest potential. HMJDS graduates are recognized as successful learners and leaders committed to the Jewish community and the global society throughout their lives.
Our community is guided by ten core values which appear throughout the school and in parent and faculty/staff handbooks. The core values come to life as students study one each month through coordinated and creative activities and everyday age-appropriate applications.
Cornerstones of Education at HMJDS
- A holistic Jewish education and spiritual experience.
- A superior and individualized academic program, grounded in knowledge, research, critical thinking, communication, and creativity/arts.
- A warm community, accessible to a wide spectrum of families, and commitment to helping students become aware and engaged members of the broader global community.
History of the School
Founded in 1984, the Amos and Celia Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School (HMJDS) is a K-8 program enrolling approximately 300 students from the Twin Cities area.
We are located on the Barry Family Campus in St. Louis Park which also houses the Sabes Jewish Community Center and Talmud Torah of Minneapolis (a supplemental school program). Our state-of-the-art school building opened in 2001 and provides high quality classroom and office space. We also benefit from the Sabes JCC’s onsite art, theater, and gymnasium facilities.
We offer an egalitarian program that respects the diversity of Jewish life and practice. The school places emphasis on creative thinking, problem solving, and the development of leadership responsibility.
HMJDS is an independent, K-8 learning community that inspires students to realize the height of their potential and empowers them to use their knowledge, skills, and creativity to enrich our world.
We offer engaging academic and creative arts coursework masterfully integrated with Hebrew and Judaic Studies in our Lower School (K-4) and Upper School (5-8). Academic achievement, growing self-confidence, and pride in Jewish identity are hallmarks of an HMJDS education. Graduates are well prepared for their next educational steps and are able to articulate their knowledge and opinions effectively. They are ready to take on the world, equipped with critical-thinking skills, self-knowledge and global-mindedness.
